Artist statement

My anonymous person mentioned liking warmer colors and plants. To portray this, I wanted to have leaves creeping in through the corners and having flowers being the main focus. I made the pollen look like microbes, because they have a passion for microbiology. Their favorite song is "Not a lot, just forever" by Adrianne Lenker. One line in the lyrics is "Intertwined, sewn together", so I wanted to make the background look like yarn, coloring it in a warm orange. My original idea was to sew through the paper to give it dimension and character, but after testing that out on separate paper, the decision was to color instead. Personally, my piece could have been way better. If I were to change anything, I would have added more dimension to the colors and shading to make them pop out more. I could have also had the flowers be cut out and layered onto the paper so the art doesn't look so flat. In my head, the idea was there, it just was not executed well.

Soul Ties

I named my first piece of the year "Soul Ties". I wanted to show identity and individuality via true love, how your soulmate will not see you for your physical appearance, they will see you for your soul and what makes you different from the rest. To create this, I used drawing pencils and golden paint to show their souls mixing together. I chose to use gold because I wanted it to pop out from the rest of the piece. Overall, I think I could have made the gold stick out more by using pen and ink. It was my original thought process however I am not the best at showing value with a pen. One thing I could improve on is not making such harsh lines on the bodies, as real life does not have an outline.

Smile

One of my main problems with my Identity and Individuality SI was creating original pieces, it seemed that all my ideas have already been done before. With that, I found that nobody in the world knows me better than I know myself, resulting in a change of my SI. My new SI is going to be what makes me unique. My first piece "Smile" shows me, animated and bubbly in a colorless environment otherwise known as the real world. Many people describe me as an upbeat person all of the time, so I wanted to show that in my work.  I branched out and tried a new medium, alcohol markers and stickers which I have never used in art before to make it stand out. I left some of the photo outcropped to emphasize that it is a pop-out piece, another technique that is new to me. For the most part, I am proud of how it turned out. One thing I know I can improve on is my one-point perspective work. Although it looks good overall, there are a couple technical flaws that I intend on fixing.

Bug Eyes

My second piece "Bug Eyes" is to highlight the first thing many people notice about me. All throughout my life, people have compared my eyes to be like bugs. I have never taken this as an insult though, I always thought it was something beautiful that makes me stand out, as I get many compliments on them as well. I take lots of pride and time into making my eyes stand out everyday by ensuring my eyelashes look flawless. To me, a bad lash day is a bad day overall. It may sound silly but again, that is an aspect of me that makes me unique. To create my piece, I used pen and colored pencils. I took inspiration from the 2016 Tumblr line art style. One artist I found in particular is Olivia Pullman (artwork on the right). I love how minimalist yet pretty her art style is. Even though, mine is not in black and white, I wanted to make it look like it would be on Tumblr. One thing I'd change about my piece is layering the colored pencils on my skin more to make it darker.

Unity

My third piece is made to highlight my different personalities and traits, through animals. My favorite animal has always been the grizzly bear. I admire its strength and bravery, while still looking more than beautiful. To me, bears represent beauty and power. I tried to show the power and coarseness of the bear by hunting the salmon and represented in the texture of the tree.  The deer on the other hand, to me and to stereotypes represents pureness, beauty, and grace. When I asked the class what animal best represented me, many people responded either bunny or doe. Two animals who are both seen to be calm and loving. I added butterflies to show grace and I also wanted to show it through the smoothness of the tree. The piece is to show the contradicting personality traits that make up who I am. When you put the two pieces together, they create one, one balance, otherwise known as me. If I hadn't been lost on what to make for so long, I would use watercolor in this piece. It was very difficult for me to show value and color in the bear with pen and ink, as it is light enough to pass for a polar bear. However, I am proud of how the doe turned out, it's shaded well and came out exactly how I envisioned it.
